The Crown

The Crown then
(picture from SWOP website)
and as it looks today

The Crown, another pub long gone,
A jolly place of beer and song,
What tales these timbers here could tell
Of bar room games and beer to sell,
Alas no more the clink of glass
The poor old Crown has seen its last,
And travellers along today
Must find another place to play.

The Crown was a public house along the London Road. This busy junction had several pubs - The Bricklayers (later the Derehams Inn), The Oxford Arms (later the White Blackbird) and The Crown. Next door, between the pub and the corner shop, was the home of the Oliver family.
