Saunders, situated near the rec,
And backing onto local beck,
Sold the thing you needed most
- Coal to keep you warm as toast -
And so the railway in the vale
Brought the coal they had for sale.

Saunders was one of several coal merchants in the area - a profitable business at this time. In 1911 John James Saunders lived with his family at the Laurels, London Road.
