Kingsmead, as the name suggests,
Perhaps a mead at royal request?
Its origins, way back in time,
Prevent its history in this rhyme,
Suffice to say this flood plain space
Survives today with lush green grace
And many lives refresh their souls
On this green lea, however old.

Kingsmead is actually a flood plain and this would explain why it has been saved as a recreational space - for now anyway.
