Albert Ernest Stevens 1891 - 1919

I am Albert Ernest Stevens and I was born in 1891 in High Wycombe. My parents were George William Stevens & Ellen. We lived at at Rosa Place, High Wycombe and my father was a chair polisher. I came from a large family of 13 children, although by 1911 only 7 of us still survived. I was still living at home with my parents at that time but not for much longer, as on 17th February 1912 I married Ellen Elizabeth Litchfield at the Union Chapel, High Wycombe. I was employed as a chair machinist.

Ellen and I had 5 children: Albert Thomas, Lily Maude, George Henry, Edward Ernest and Amy Claribel who was born in 1918. Our oldest child was only 7yrs old when I died.

I joined the 29TH Reserve Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers aged 24yrs on 30th October 1915. I became Private PS/8982 and my number suggests that I was with one of the Public Schools battalions (PS prefix). In March 1916 I saw active service in France and my battalion was sent to Etaples in the Arras district.

I was transferred to the Labour Corps on 19th November 1917 suggesting that I had a health problem. My service number was 117696. I was fortunate and survived the war and when I became ill I was awarded a war pension. My address in 1918 was 35, Dashwood Avenue, High Wycombe. I had made it home but, sadly, I was to die from pneumonia on 15th February 1919, aged 28.

My name appears on the Roll of Honour and is remembered on the Wycombe Hospital Memorial Plaque.
