Tulip field
Bottom of Chapel Road

As the area looks today

The fields just here (and some remain)
Once grew a different crop
And they, indeed, if left to bloom
Would make the locals stop.
For tulips grew upon these fields,
Yes, row, on row, on row,
All grown for London’s market
Several decades, now, ago.
The farm girls did the labour
And bunched up all the blooms,
But the trade was quickly over
For the war came all too soon.

The tulip fields did not last long in the village and the Second World War finally put paid to the enterprise when fields were required for growing food as opposed to flowers.
