The chapel building undergoing repair

The chapel building today

Built as a chapel, used as a school,
Learning’s important, that was the rule.
Basic in nature, small in its way,
Strict were the lessons before you could play!

An early place of worship in the village. The school however would have been extremely basic, providing help in learning to read the Bible. It was not the earliest place of worship though because in 1832 John Wright, owner of the land of what is now the Swains Market area built a room where Wesleyans could meet. This flint faced building at the east end of the parade of shops is still there. On weekdays the room doubled as a school room charging tuppence a week. Reading classes were later given in the, then new, Wesleyan Chapel - see Wesleyan Chapel. The school moved yet again when the Victorian School was built on the plot where the Community Centre now stands. Finally, in the 1960s, Carrington Junior School was built on Lady Carrington's recreation ground.
