Dairy cows

This cottage, once a dairy farm
Owned by the Smiths, held rural charm
Surrounded by its dairy herd
Producing milk, cream, whey and curd.
Although the cottage stands today
The pasture now is tarmacked way
Which carries just the Meadows name
Although the views are not the same.
But village lads, now grown-up men,
Can still recall the times back then
When they helped steer the dairy herd
Back and forth along this road.

This house was the home of 'Civil John' Smith and his large family. He worked in the mills in the valley below, was also the village constable and kept a dairy herd. He was a busy man! His son Stan, still remembered in the village today, took over the dairy herd and recruited village lads and lasses to steer his cows along the lanes from one pasture to another. The recreation ground was once one of his fields. Click on the Learn More buttons here and at Smith's field and at the recreation ground to learn more.
