The yellow flowers from gorse were picked in large quanitites to be made into a yellow dye. (Gorse smells of coconut so the scent of all those flowers would have been amazing!) It was common to pick the canker-roses off the briars and carry them in your pocket as a certain preventative of rheumatism.
