Robert Purchase was born in 1881 in Maidenhead, Berkshire. He was the son of John & Jane. In 1881 the family were living at 7, Garden Cottages, Cookham, Berkshire. His father was widowed by 1901 and they were living at 33,Bridge Street, High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. Robert is aged 20yrs and is an upholsterer. His sister Amy is also living with them and is a chair caner.
Robert married Fanny Rebecca Pusey in 1906. In 1911 the family had two children Robert James aged 3yrs and Albert Edward aged 2yrs. They recorded having had three children of whom two were still living. The address is given as 88, Prince of Wales Avenue, Reading, Berkshire.
Research shows the Pusey family (Fanny’s family) were living in Flackwell Heath in 1881 so this is probably the connection with Robert.
Robert enlisted at Farnborough and was originally with the R.F.C no 11979. His Battalion of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps saw action on the Western Front. 12,840 men were killed from the Regiment during WW1. In 1918 the Battalion were engaged in the Battles of Lys, Hindenberg Line and the final advance in Picardy.
During WW1 Commonwealth camps and hospitals were stationed on the southern outskirts of Rouen. The extension was started in 1916 and the last burial was in 1920. The area contains 8,348 Commonwealth burials
