Frederick was born in Loudwater in 1890 to William and Sarah (nee Tilbury). In 1911 he was living in Back Lane, Loudwater, with his mother and stepfather Alfred Why (Sarah had married Alfred Why in 1907, the year after William died). Alfred was a mill labourer and Frederick and his two brothers and sister also worked at a local mill.
Having previously been a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery from 1914 to 1916, Frederick enlisted into the Royal Warwickshire Regiment at High Wycombe and was attached to the 9th battalion of the New Armies. The 9th Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment had been formed at Warwick in 1914 and came under the command of the 39th Brigade, 13th (Western) Division. It was moved to Gallipoli in July 1915, Egypt in January 1916 and Mesopotamia in February 1916. Private Climpson died on 7th July 1916 in Mesopotamia.
As well as the Loudwater memorial, his name appears on the Bucks roll of Honour, High Wycombe Roll of Honour, Wycombe Marsh Memorial and Wycombe Hospital Memorial. He is remembered with honour at the Amara War Cemetery in Iraq.
