If Harold is from the Smith family who lived by The Common then they were dairy farmers in their spare time, farming the land which is now The Meadows.
Like many families in the village they held down several jobs to support their large families. Harold's father, John, was a papermaker and also the village constable.
By the start of WW1 several family members had emigrated to Canada but they, too, joined up
to fight the cause.
