Not long after my father started his retirement he gave a talk to the Probus Club in High Wycombe about life as a tailor and the history of the family firm – some of these memories have been included here. He was always very proud of the family history associated with Castle Hill and often had whimsical fancies of how it might have been his if only his father had not been such a cause of consternation to the family. The rift was obviously not so great as to prevent my parents from being invited to meals with Aunt Minnie – strangely, for those days, a vegetarian – and there are photographs of them on the lawn at Castle Hill in the early 1950s. However, they always felt the ‘poor relations’.
